Formative:
Providing feedback during the instructional process, formative assessments measure how much knowledge the learners have acquired and identify areas that may need additional emphasis and improvement. While they may or may not be graded, they are effective at determining the effectiveness of instruction. These assessments may be knowledge check quizzes, exercises, and even self-assessment through learner reflections about what they have learned.
This minicourse will use a variety of formative assessments including class discussions, exercises, and knowledge checks throughout the course.
Authentic:
Learning activities that evaluate a learner's ability to apply their knowledge and skills to practical situations are authentic assessments. These incorporate real-world scenarios. These include simulations, case studies, portfolios, interviews and others. They typically have a rubric that outlines the criteria for evaluating performance so learners know the expectations.
This minicourse will employ a several different authentic assessment strategies for different modules and will include:
Summative:
Once the course is completed, a summative assessment provides information and feedback on how well the learners achieved their goals, did they meet the course outcomes, and the effectiveness of instruction and materials. This can be achieved through examinations, term papers, projects or student evaluations.
This minicourse will have a two-part summative assessment at the end of the course that includes an overall knowledge check of key points and a student evaluation and reflection of what they have gained from the course, or areas they would still like support.
